Butterflies Dancing in The Light, 10 x 8" watercolor and gouache on cold press.

The Royal Butterfly Barb (Opsarius pulchellus) is a beautiful small fish found in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and parts of Yunnan, China. It inhabits clear, rocky, fast-moving streams below steep mountains. Reaching a maximum size of less than 5 inches, these Cyprinids have blue bands and males have longer fins tinged with crimson or orange. They feed mostly on insects that fall on the surface of the water, however, with a large mouth, they are capable of consuming larger aquatic invertebrates and small fish. They are very quick and active fish that may be aggressive to tank mates, especially in small spaces.

I am very fond of these swift moving fish. They are not often available in the aquarium hobby, but when I had them, I really enjoyed tgeir unwavering activity when given abundant water flow. They snatch food reminiscent to Trout feeding and their colors shimmer in strong light. I chose to take a risk painting light rays piercing the water in order to illustrate clarity of the environment where they are found.
