Michael K. Oliver
ICYMI, recent cichlid research suggests that the white-barred young of the LakeTanganyika cichlid Neolamprologus furcifer masquerade as a white-striped snail and thereby gain protection from predation.
Parental females of a nest-brooding cichlid improve and benefit from the protective value of young masquerading as snails

Mark Smith I wonder if this applies to N. timidus also?

Michael K. Oliver I don't know. That species is not mentioned in this article.

Henrik Malchau They get very few ofspring so could be smart to have protection like that

Mark Smith "4) Guarded young had black/white coloration only in populations where the model snails were present". I wonder where (precise location in the lake) the authors studied the N. furcifer juveniles with said coloration. If their observations were in areas along the Tanzanian coastline where both N. furcifer and N. timidus live in sympatry, might statement 4 need to be altered in some form?
